Why was it important to create the BSMC - Cathay Williams Regiment?

Cathay Williams was the only female Buffalo Soldier. She enlisted in the Army by posing as a man, at a time when women were not allowed to serve. The Cathay Williams Regiment was created by women for women in her honor.
